Chapter Twelve
Chapter 12
Donovan
In my living room, I’m staring at the report like the PI just told me what day I was going to die. Great, we found some information…but this isn’t good news. I feel anything but hope as I look over this. On another deal my father apparently did the same thing in Alaska that he did in Chile. I remember visiting Alaska about fifteen years ago. My dad, brothers, and I went for a “business” trip, but I don’t remember us doing much business on that trip. We mostly went out on boats and hiked.
Sinclair Investigation 2/2: “The deed has your father’s signature, and you will find the price incomparably low. There is suspicion that another form of payment may have been in play. Besides this, the sale of land displaced a group of indigenous tribes. These tribes have tried to fight back. They say that the deal was not properly translated, that they were misled about what they were signing. This arrangement in Alaska is similar to what happened in Chile,”
Shit. Where the fuck is Frank? I need his advice. Not only would he know how to dig us out of this, but he was probably present at that deal signing, and he’d have some extra background on it. Everything is falling out from underneath us and he is nowhere to be found.
I dial up the PI. “I really need to find Frank Johannsen,” I say.
He sounds regretful. “I haven’t received an intel on Frank. I don’t know why you peg him as being in Thailand, because I haven’t been able to find any leads on him there. I’ve even run a scanner on all the passports used to enter Thailand from the US. He could, of course, have made a stop in another country first.”
“Well, keep looking.” There is a silent agreement on the other end of the line. I shake my head and hang up. You can never pay enough money, can you? No intel. I want to throw the phone across the room. I need Frank.
Frank was the one who helped me get through my father’s death. I don’t know that I could have moved on and taken over the business so quickly without Frank. Maybe the grief hit Frank, too, and harder than I originally thought. Dad’s death affected us all in different ways. Dax had to numb the pain with extreme vacations, Jefferson skips town for Asia, and Frank disappears into thin air.
I need another drink, so I walk over to the wet bar. I see Calista’s face in the reflection of my grandfather clock. How happy she looked last night. I try to get rid of her image, but it’s impossible. I remember how the wine tasted on her lips, and nothing else will satisfy me. Another shot of whiskey. Seems like every five seconds, another mental snapshot of her flashes in my mind. Bent over the chair, laying naked on top of my sheets, and standing in my bedroom, waiting to leave.
